New Delhi: Instagram, the photo and video-sharing platform owned by Meta, is expanding its supported visual formats by allowing users to post single images in a 3:4 aspect ratio. This update aligns more closely with the default photo settings found on most smartphone cameras.

The change was first announced through Instagram’s official broadcast channel and was later explained in more detail by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, on Threads. “From now on, if you upload a 3:4 image, it’ll now appear just exactly as you shot it,” Mosseri wrote. He noted that this adjustment provides users with more flexibility in how their images are displayed on the platform.

Until now, Instagram restricted vertical photos to a 4:5 aspect ratio. Any images taller than that were subject to cropping in order to fit within the platform’s supported formats. While users also had the option to post images in a 1:1 square format or a 5:4 ratio, those that fell outside these dimensions typically required manual adjustments before being uploaded.

This modification marks a shift in Instagram’s long-standing approach to visual presentation, reflecting the platform’s recognition of changing user habits and the need for more adaptable sharing options.

In a separate trial, Instagram has introduced a new experimental feature called “Blend.” This tool curates a shared feed of recommended Reels between users through direct messages. Currently, “Blend” is available on an invite-only basis and is limited to iOS and Android devices. The feature uses individuals’ activity and preferences to generate tailored content, indicating Meta’s continuing effort to personalise the content discovery experience across its applications.
