Delhi: When people call their work ‘bread and butter,’ no one would have predicted it to materialise as a viral meme on social media, starting with the professional space LinkedIn.
As the annual appraisal season on LinkedIn has dawned, a new trend called #AppraisalButter is gaining popularity.
The New Thing, Talented’s social and culture marketing agency, has launched a butter packet named 'L'Appraisal Butter' to celebrate this appraisal season.
The New Thing announced on social media that they collaborated with LinkedIn to design a unique butter packet called the 'L'Appraisal Butter.' The New Thing explained that they created over 50 exclusive packets and delivered them to workplaces, with a message that encouraged people to focus on improving their performance instead of trying to butter their boss during the appraisal season.
Talking about the idea, corporatcomics on Instagram remarked that the ‘butter’ churned from a comic he had posted in 2022, regarding buttering up one’s bosses for appraisals. Fast forward to now, when LinkedIn picked up this idea to educate about tips and tricks to navigate appraisals and further one’s career.
A few influencers, including Ankita Chawla popularly known as "hustlerani" too have joined in for this year's appraisal season. In the reel, Chawla shares tips on how to butter bosses but in the right measure.
Brut India has also created vox pop interviews to gather people's opinions on “buttering up” bosses.
On LinkedIn, the platform that started it all, professionals on both sides of the spectrum from bosses to employees teemed with opinions. A Chief Human Resource Officer remarked, “After all, too much butter could make things slippery! So take your decision wisely.”
“We can all get a chuckle out of such anecdotes of 'maska maarna', but the truth is that they're all a sign of lack of guidance at the workplace,” said another user as she used the pack of butter to initiate conversation around gender gap in appraisals.
A CEO remarked, “Buttering can be a slippery slope, folks! But what always stands firm is honesty and consistency in communication,” as he spoke about the perspective of a boss in a workplace.
With its new and creative initiative, LinkedIn has set the stage for conversations beyond ‘high tea’ networking, quite literally, with its butter spread far and wide across social media.
