New Delhi: Meta has rolled out an expansion to its AI-powered translation tool, enabling creators on Instagram and Facebook to automatically translate, dub, and lip-sync their Reels into Hindi, alongside English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

This update, announced on October 9, 2025, aims to break down language barriers and help creators reach broader audiences in some of the platform's largest markets, such as India.

The feature builds on Meta's earlier support for English-Spanish translations, which was introduced in 2024.

Now, with Hindi and Portuguese added, users can enjoy multilingual content that feels more natural and authentic. Meta AI mimics the creator's voice tone and sound during dubbing, ensuring the translated audio doesn't sound robotic. Creators also have the option to enable lip-syncing, which aligns the dubbed audio with the speaker's mouth movements for a seamless viewing experience.

Eligibility and availability

The dubbing tool is free and available to all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is supported, as well as Facebook creators with at least 1,000 followers. This means smaller creators on Instagram can start using it immediately, provided their account is public and they're in an eligible region. Meta has emphasised that the feature was developed based on feedback from creators looking to expand their global reach.

How the feature works: Step-by-step guide

Using the dubbing feature is straightforward and integrated directly into the Reels creation process on Instagram. Here's how creators can enable it:

  1. Upload your reel: Start by creating or selecting your Reel as usual in the Instagram app.
  2. Access the translation option: Before publishing, look for the new “Translate your voice with Meta AI” toggle in the posting menu.
  3. Choose languages and options: Select the target languages (such as Hindi) and decide whether to enable lip-syncing for a more polished result.
  4. Preview and approve: Meta AI will generate the dubbed version. Review the preview to ensure accuracy, then approve and publish.

Once published, dubbed Reels are clearly labelled with "Translated with Meta AI" to inform viewers of the AI involvement. This transparency helps maintain trust, especially as AI-generated content becomes more common.

Viewer controls and preferences

Viewers aren't left out of the equation. When watching a translated Reel, the dubbed audio plays automatically in their preferred language, but they can easily switch back to the original. Simply tap the three-dot menu on the Reel, navigate to the audio and language section, and select "Don't translate" for that video or adjust overall preferences. This flexibility ensures users can enjoy content in their native tongue or experience it authentically as intended by the creator.

Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg demonstrated the feature in a series of Instagram videos, dubbing his own content into Hindi, Spanish, and Portuguese to showcase its capabilities. Instagram Head Adam Mosseri also highlighted it in a post, emphasising how it opens up new opportunities for global storytelling.

With more languages planned for the future, this update positions Meta AI as a powerful tool for cross-cultural content creation on Instagram. Creators interested in trying it should ensure their app is updated and check for the feature in eligible regions.
