New Delhi: Instagram is experimenting with a feature that would allow users to fine-tune what appears in their Reels and Explore feeds. The update, announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a post on Threads, lets users add or remove topics to shape their recommendations more precisely.

“Today we're starting to test a way for you to tune your algorithm on Instagram by adding and removing topics based on your interests,” Mosseri said. “We're launching this feature on Reels first, with plans to expand to Explore soon.”

The feature, currently being tested with a small group of users, would give people the ability to manually adjust their algorithm instead of depending entirely on the app’s automated system. It is designed to help users better manage what dominates their feeds, whether that’s travel videos, technology updates, or lifestyle content.

The test follows Instagram’s ongoing efforts to make its recommendation system more transparent. Over the past year, the platform has introduced tools allowing users to limit sensitive content, adjust parental controls, and hide suggested posts that appear irrelevant.

While Mosseri did not specify which users are part of the test or when it might roll out more widely, he described the update as “a meaningful new way to shape what you see.”

He also indicated that Meta could consider testing a similar model for Threads. According to a report by 9to5Mac, the concept follows a trend on Threads where users post messages directed at “the algorithm,” asking to be connected with others who share their interests.
